Classic 1981 concept album from Japanese guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka, blending jazz fusion, city pop, prog, funk, and tropical rock.
Inspired by Ul de Rico’s illustrated fantasy book The Rainbow Goblins, with a colorful, storybook-like flow across the album.
Features Takanaka’s bright lead guitar, lush arrangements, and the kind of breezy, high-energy playing that made his catalog a favorite with Japanese fusion collectors.
For fans of: Casiopea, Hiroshi Sato, Ryo Kawasaki, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Pacific Breeze comps, and sun-dazed Japanese city pop with serious musicianship.
A cult favorite for a reason, The Rainbow Goblins turns fantasy art, jazz-funk chops, and island-bright guitar lines into one of Takanaka’s most beloved records. It is playful, polished, and deeply catchy without losing the weird little sparkle that makes Japanese fusion so fun to dig into.
