- 3LP set pressed on clear lime yellow, clear red, and clear blue vinyl, mastered and cut by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios
- First complete release of Masayoshi Takanaka’s March 10 and 11, 1981 Nippon Budokan concerts as a single audio work
This set presents the full scope of Masayoshi Takanaka’s Rainbow Goblins Story, recorded across two nights at Nippon Budokan in March 1981. The performances coincide with the release of The Rainbow Goblins, his landmark concept album inspired by Ul de Rico’s illustrated book. Takanaka brings that record to the stage in the first half, then shifts into a set built from his most recognized material.
The production leans all the way in. A massive rainbow neon arch spans the stage, its colors moving in sync with the music. Lasers cut through the space. Towers of gear frame the band. Each of the seven musicians appears in a distinct goblin color, while Takanaka takes center stage in a yellow jumpsuit, playing a rainbow-finished Yamaha SG. The show builds a complete visual world and locks it to the music with precision.
This marks the first time the entire performance appears as a unified release. The three LPs mirror the palette of the stage and the instrument itself, tying the physical object back to the concert’s design. A photo booklet documents the set in detail, capturing the scale and ambition of the production. Liner notes by Masayoshi Kondo and Yoshinobu Maruyama add context, grounding the spectacle in its moment.
Members: Masahiro Miyazaki (Dr), Akihiro Tanaka (Ba), Izumi Kobayashi (Key), Kiyozumi Ishikawa (Key), Yuki Sugawara (Perc), Makoto Kimura (Perc), Koji Satsuma (Sax)
