The Stranger pairs Billy Joel's detailed character writing with a band that can move easily between driving rock, gentle ballads and more elaborate narrative forms. Phil Ramone's production keeps the performances warm and clear. The piano remains central, but the rhythm section and carefully placed instrumental parts give the songs their lasting shape.
