Miles Davis “Sketches of Spain” (Mono) LP

Sketches of Spain puts the focus on trumpet-led modern jazz, from hard bop and modal playing to orchestral and electric experimentation.

• Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans build the album around a large ensemble of brass, woodwinds, and percussion rather than a standard small jazz group.
• The centerpiece adapts Joaquín Rodrigo's “Concierto de Aranjuez,” using Davis's trumpet as a stark, vocal-like lead against Evans's orchestration.
• The album remains one of the clearest examples of Davis and Evans expanding jazz through orchestral color and Spanish musical influence.

For fans of John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter.
