Solo percussion album from the Korean-born, Sydney-based drummer and improviser.
Produced by Randall Dunn, with artwork by Pat Aulisio.
The title draws on Kim's mother's birth dream and the ratsnake's symbolism of resilience and good fortune.
For fans of: Milford Graves, Chris Corsano, and exploratory solo percussion.
Ratsnake places Chloe Kim's dynamic control and melodic sense of percussion at the center of the listening experience. She treats the drum set as a source of pitch, texture, space, and movement, allowing precise patterns and free improvisation to develop together. The performances reveal how much expressive variety a solo player can create.
Kim's approach moves between forceful rhythmic passages and quieter details, with shifts in touch giving each piece a distinct shape. Randall Dunn's production helps reveal that range. For listeners interested in the meeting point of jazz, contemporary percussion, and free improvisation, this is a focused portrait of an individual musical language.
