Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album broadens their melodic metal sound with strings, layered voices and ambitious changes in arrangement. The guitar harmonies and precise drumming remain central, but the songs make room for both balladry and elaborate theatrical sequences. That range gives the album a distinct character alongside its forceful riffs and prominent choruses.
